SINGAPORE PIE (1990)

How does the Xinyao sound like?

Anecdote
(Liang Wern Fook)
(Liang Wern Fook)

My father said I was born in the 1960s
The nation came into being when I was about a year old plus
At that time no one believed in the Singapore brand
Some even migrated overseas
The theatre near my old home was built in the 1960s
I squeezed through the crowd to watch the stars at the opening ceremony
Cantonese (Hong Kong) films then were all in black and white
And some of them filmed in Singapore

Singapore gained independence on 9 August 1965, which is the day for our annual National Day celebrations

Slowly we entered the 1970s
As I put on my school uniform I looked smart and impressive
All the smoke funnels in Jurong stood tall and in style
Growing taller and taller faster than I

Brigitte Lin’s movies were the most popular then
And Fong Fei-fei’s love songs were well loved by everyone in class
Junie Sng won a series of gold medals for Singapore
Making me extremely excited throughout the night
As we unkowingly entered the 1980s
The emergence of the MRT sped up the story even faster
All of a sudden everyone had to take responsibility for himself
And it was the year that Xinyao began

We then moved into a comfortable new home
After that the old theatre was turned into a church
Sometimes I would visit the old place alone with nostalgia
Trying to recollect my childhood days of yesteryear

Singapore's MRT first began its operations on 7 November 1987
My friends said my life was getting better and better
In exactly the same way as the country
Did the country give me the breadth of vision
Or I gave the country my love?
In the blink of an eye we came to the 1990s
Father please sing again that sentimental song of the days of yore
Our stories we’ll record them by ourselves
The future lies in the hands of the next generation

Since other people have sent over their pies
We can also create our own Singapore pie
Now is the turn for other people to migrate here
Who does not love the Singapore brand?
I like it Singapore Pie
I most like the Singapore brand!
